PROJECT description:

Motifs represent one of the oldest architectural concepts, deeply rooted in spiritual origins and historically evolving in scale and significance. Initially expressed as decorative elements in early classical architecture, motifs gradually expanded to influence the tectonic massing of entire buildings. With this legacy in mind, the BA01 project embraces an oval motif as a response to its unique site conditions.

Situated at the corner of a generously curved road, the site provided a quarter segment of the base elliptical form, which was then expanded into a full oval and extruded to define the building envelope. The upper floor is rotated and oriented toward panoramic views, generating dynamic overhangs and roof decks as natural extensions of this spatial maneuver. Apertures within this framework cultivate a seamless interplay of exhibition and observation between the architecture and its surroundings. The design consciously rejects isolated, flat facades in favor of a multidimensional exterior that invites maximum visual engagement from all angles.

Though the geometry may appear abstract and diverge from conventional residential archetypes, functionality remains paramount. The rotation and overlay of the motif create layered spatial sequences, while a nuanced treatment of enclosure and partitioning gives rise to semi-enclosed balconies and decks on both floors. These spaces—framed by a delicate screen of fins—offer shaded, semi-outdoor living environments perfectly suited to California’s climate. Extending beyond the building itself, the motif informs the landscape, pool, outdoor decks, driveway, and basement, unifying the project into a cohesive architectural composition.
